Know Your Embodiment – Foundations in Iyengar Yoga, Shamatha Meditation & Astrology
27 – 30 April 2018
This 4-day retreat will support you in embarking on a personal journey of opening the Mind to awaken the Heart through a solid understanding of the foundations of Yoga and the principles of Mindfulness, while introducing you to Astrology.
We will encourage you to rediscover the openness, fearlessness and love that is the essence of our own life by gradually and gently approaching the powerful experience of awakening the Heart through a series of exercises that allow the mind to quiet down.
We will explore the simple but profound practice of Mindfulness as the foundation of living a fully embodied, joyful, and awakened life. We will get in touch with the wonder and profound richness of our moment-to-moment experience.
The retreat will explore the reasoning behind the first two limbs of yoga, the Yamas and Niyamas, which outline lifestyle parameters for the aspiring practitioner. We will see that the ultimate stage of yoga, Samadhi (higher consciousness), is as much the outcome of what we don’t do, as it is of what we do.
There will be opening and closing lectures on Indian Astrology – also known as Vedic Astrology or Jyotisha – which is a classical science that has been preserved for thousands of years to serve as a mirror of human life so that we may learn how to better live in harmony with our inner most experience and the greater world around us.
We will examine and practice the pivotal techniques of Pranayama (the study of the breath), and see how they are a catalysts for entry into the inner stages of yoga, that is Dharana (concentration), Dhyana (meditation) and Samadhi, (higher consciousness) where the true alchemy of the transformation of the mind from being just a servant of the senses into becoming an instrument through which the self can be experienced, takes place.
Over the 4 days you will learn authentic techniques that focus and calm the discursive mind, and give space for inner wisdom and insight to arise.
The retreat will provide you with a map of the journey of yogic sadhana (a conscious spiritual practice) to help instill in you inspiration, confidence and certainty on your yogic path.
With precise and easy-to-follow guidance, you will learn to build each pose from the ground up while tuning into the body-mind, to harmonise movement, breathing, and awareness, to work with yourphysical “edges”, to release stuck emotions, to create strength and well-being both physically and spiritually.
As we know ourselves to be part of a great matrix of life, we know we are not separate, yet we sometime feel disconnected from the symphony of existence. By utilizing timeless symbols – the planets and stars – which speak to our mind and our heart, Vedic Astrology illuminates the patterns behind the lack of clarity that is are an inherent part of human experience.
As such, the retreat is open to both beginners and experienced yogi/nis, as beginners will find a safe environment to embark on their own yoga journey, whereas experienced practitioners will benefit from the support to further their existing practice.

About Eliza Bishop
Eliza Bishop is a certified Iyengar Yoga Instructor and Meditation Guide. She’s been practicing for 15 years and teaching for 5. She lived 3 years in India and studied with the Iyengar family in Pune and Swati and Rajiv Chanchani of Yog-Ganga, with whom she still makes regular retreats. For Eliza, the art of teaching means bringing human beings into an asana with complete involvement of body, mind, and breath, creating awareness that allows one, eventually, to study the mind. In this way the yogic and Buddhist paths merge into one and have solidified a life long path for Eliza. Yoga is for every body and can teach us all that we ultimately belong to the same family.
